Residents of Ruhashya sector in Huye District have pledged total abstinence against drug abuse and play an active role in the fight against the vice in order to further improve security and safety in the area.
The assurance was made by hundreds of area residents during an anti-crime awareness exercise held on December 22 and attended by security and local authorities in the district.
Eugène Kayiranga Muzuka, Mayor of Huye, presided over the anti-crime awareness exercise which was also attended by the District Police Commander (DPC), Superintendent of Police, Jules Rutayisire.
The awareness exercise came a day after a targeted operation conducted in Ruhashya seized about 500 liters of illicit brew. The illicit brew was publicly destroyed at the same event, a move that aimed at deterring the public against indulging in their consumption as well as distilling them.
“Abusing drugs and illicit brew have no positive effect. They only affect the individual, his family and even the country. Therefore, you should all desist from them, advise your fellows and also work with Police to cut down the practice,” Mayor Kayiranga said.
Superintendent Rutayisire lauded the residents for their role in security and called them to continue collaborating with Police and other security organs by providing timely information about threats to safety and security.
The general population have been credited for their crucial role in maintaining security in their localities through a community policing proactive.
