Huye: Residents cautioned over wild fires

Farmers in Huye district have been warned against bush burning, which results into wild fires that destroy property and environmental in general.

The call was made on August 13 in Bunazi, Muyogoro and Buremera cells where wild fires are common, especially caused by those harvesting honey in forests and hills and farmers who burn wastes in their gardens.

A team composed of Police, army and local authorities in the district visited the three cells to sensitize them on environmental protection and how to dispose-off garden wastes instead of burning them, which is also illegal.

District Mayor, Eugene Kayiranga Muzuka, who led the Bunazi team noted that the renowned hill of 'Ibisi bya Huye' has been affected by fires caused by  farmers especially when harvesting honey.

“These acts have destroyed the ecosystem at Ibisi bya Huye which can't be allowed to continue. It's important that we join efforts to fight these acts by reporting those involved because you will also be saving your lives and property," Kayiranga said.

In Buremera, Chief Supt. Tom Murangira, the District Police Commander appealed to bee keepers to organise themselves in cooperatives and always install their hives down the hills to avoid  possible fire outburst  during honey harvesting and always take precautions during the process.

There is always strong winds in hilly areas which blows fire that escalates to bushes resulting into wild fire.

He also warned them against charcoal burning especially in this dry season, which also contributes to wild fires in the area.

CSP Murangira also cautioned them against criminal acts of drug dealing and appealed to them to strengthen efforts with Police by reporting those involved.
