A Police targeted operation against psychotropic substances in Huye District recently, led to the seizure of over 1,200 liters of illicit brew locally known as Muriture.

Muriture is classified among narcotics in Rwanda under the Ministerial Order determining unauthorized drinks and other controlled substances classified as narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances.

The narcotics were recovered from the house of one Habineza Balthazar, a resident of Kiruhura Cell in Rusatira sector, Police said.

While addressing residents at the exercise to destroy the narcotics, Inspector of Police (IP) Dominique Nkurunziza, the station commander of Rusatira police station thanked the residents for their continued role in fighting crimes and drug abuse in particular.

“Any liquid substance that contains more than 0.5 percent of methanol in its composition not supposed to be taken because its harmful to the health,” said IP Nkurunziza .

He told area residents to desist from consuming and producing such psychotropic substances, and share information about whoever is involved to prevent causing ill health to unwitting drinkers.
