Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Huye District have been called upon to renew their proactive policing duties and focus much on detecting and preventing crimes.
The District Political and Civic Education Officer (DPCEO) for Huye, Inspector of Police (IP) Leonille Mujawamariya, while addressing CPCs in Ruhashya Sector on Tuesday, observed that strong and close collaboration with the people is an effective channel for smooth information flow.
The DPCEO, who was flanked by the Executive Secretary of Ruhashya Sector Octave Nsabyamahoro, reminded the CPCs of their role in ensuring security, the impact of night patrols and urged them to own and control the community policing initiatives.
She asked them to lead by example and work with Police through information sharing.
“CPCs, Irondo (community night patrols) and neighborhood watch are all initiatives to further make community policing meaningful towards sustainable safety and security; the success of these initiatives largely lies in your hands as people on the ground. Make sure night patrols are well planned and done,” IP Mujawamaliya said.
“You also have a significant role to play in the safety and security of your respective societies and to sensitize the people on their responsibility of reporting all illegal or criminal acts,” she added.
IP Mujawamaliya also said that despite remarkable step in dealing with crimes related to illicit drugs and gender based violence, the two crimes are still common in the district, which requires double efforts to detect and combat them.
She also urged them to protect children by sharing information on people employing minors or serving them alcoholic beverages.
Nsabyamahoro also urged the CPCs to reinforce security in the sector.
“You have to uphold discipline and invest much in crime prevention… take a lead in ensuring public safety,” said Nsabyamahoro.
