Commercial motorcyclists in Huye District have been cautioned against engaging in unlawful tendencies, but called upon to cooperate with security organs to identify and arrest their members and other people involved in criminal acts.
They were also cautioned against facilitating criminals by either transporting them or their illegal goods.
The call was made recently by Inspector of Police (IP) Mucyo Rukundo in Ngoma Sector, during a meeting with the motorcyclists organised in two cooperatives - COTTAMOHU and CIM.
IP Mucyo, the District Community Liaisons Officer (DCLO) was flanked by the executive secretary of Ngoma Sector, Arsene Kabalisa.
The DCLO observed that transporters play an important role in facilitating movement of people and their belongings but the “business can be abused if not done carefully and legally.”
“You are expected to operate in a manner that doesn't affect the lives and wellbeing of others. Transporting a criminal, illegal or stolen goods makes you an accomplice,” IP Mucyo told the motorcyclists.
Some motorcyclists have have been arrested in different parts of the country in most cases transporting illegal goods including illicit drugs and smuggled goods.
He further warned them against violating road safety standards, which result into fatal accidents.
Motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians are said to be the majority either involved or cause road accidents.
The meeting also attended by local leaders of Ngoma Sector tackled loopholes in fighting and preventing crimes and effective means to jointly close the gaps.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to further strengthen collaboration between security organs and motorcyclists against potential threats in conducting human security activities.
