Fifty-eight staff at Kabaya Hospital in Ngororero District have been equipped with techniques to overcome fire outbreak, and how to use different gadgets to extinguish fire.
Participants in an exercise held on January 27, included medical workers and other employees of the hospital.
The hands-on skills training was organized by Police in Ngororero in partnership with the hospital management.
The training is in line with the Rwanda National Police countrywide awareness against fire outbreak and to equip the public with firefighting techniques.
Inspector of Police (IP) Alexandre Minani, the Ngororero District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), fire incidents that occur cause massive damage because people around do not have the required skills to detect or put it out with the available gadgets, before it escalates.
He noted that some fires are caused by carelessness.
“In some cases fire starts as just tiny flame; everyone including children can help stop that fire, it only requires sense of responsibility. If the flames of fire which appear very tiny at the beginning are not stopped, they could quickly spread to a bigger place of any building or facility, causing massive damage of properties and possibly life,” he said.
He, however, urged them to always call police in time for quick intervention and not to engage threatening fire.
IP Minina also pointed out that poor installation and use of substandard electric cables as another cause of fire incidents.
He advised the hospital management to install enough fire extinguishers in the facilities so as to put to use the acquired skills, in case fire breaks out.
Participants were taken through practical lessons on how to preserve and use fire extinguisher, water and dry sand to put out fire.
He urged participants to always call Police Free line: 111, 112 and other lines such as 0788311120, 0788311224, 0788311657 and 0788311335 in case of fire incidents.
Dr. Patrick Nsinga Muhoza, the head of Kabaya Hospital thanked police for extending the skills to the hospital staff.
Dr. Muhoza urged participants to always have a sense of shared responsibility in the fight against fire by applying acquired skills to fight and prevent fire hazards either at the hospital or in their communities.
