The Governor of the Eastern Province Fred Mufulukye has appealed to members on community night patrol--Irondo-- to always be exemplary to the community and observe vigilance in their community policing activities.
He also called upon residents to work and support their night patrols noting that their success in ensuring crime-free communities will also depend on partnership in all community policing spheres.
The Governor was speaking on June 26, in Kirehe District while presiding over the official launch of the "professional community night patrols" in the Eastern Province.
The new launched professional Irondo has 3000 members in the whole region. They received training on community policing prior to the launch.
The Governor observed that Irondo personnel "play a key and complimentary roles" in ensuring security prevails.
"The work of Irondo teams are complementary to that of the country’s security apparatus like the army, Police and DASSO."
Speaking at the same function, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bosco Rangira, the Regional Police commander (RPC) said that where Irondo teams work effectively security has prevailed.
He maintained that the crime rate has reduced remarkably over time due to vigilance and the public involvement in timely information sharing.
He said that Irondo members must be exemplary and equipped with the required community policing skills which complement police operations to crackdown on lawlessness and to eradicate drug abuse in communities among others.
