The Governor of the Northern Province, Aimé Bosenibamwe has called on local leaders in the region to toughen measures to prevent crimes especially drug abuse.
He was speaking on May 12 in a provincial security meeting which brought together all mayors, sector and cell executive secretaries and village leaders in the province held in Byumba sector of Gicumbi district.
Over 900 participants, who also include clerics, security organs and members of private sector.
During the meeting, local leaders observed that drug abuse remains the major security challenge in their respective areas, fuelling other crimes like domestic violence.
The Governor challenged them to strengthen their cooperation with security organs to identify individuals involved in trafficking cannabis, illicit gins like kanyanga and chief waragi, which are always sneaked into the country through illegal borders, which will help to deal with the challenge effectively.
It was also agreed during the meeting that local leaders ensure that all families install security lights.
Senior Supt. Felix Bizimana, Gicumbi District Police Commander thanked the local leaders for their continued cooperation with Police in crime prevention and arresting of culprits and urged them to up-hold the spirit.
