Gisagara motorcyclists urged to join fight against crimes

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on commercial motorcycling operating in Gisagara district to take a lead in crime prevention within the district.

The call was made by police officers on October 23, during their meeting with over 100 motorcyclists operating in Ndora Sector.

AIP Marie Chantal Uwambaye, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) particularly singled out drug abuse as one of the crimes that cause insecurity and urged motorcyclists to take a lead in fighting them.

“Your work is valuable to Rwandans and must be protected against criminality of any kind. Some criminals masquerade as motorists yet they are drug dealers, burglars or suspects in other crimes. You should cooperate with Police by identifying such individuals and report them so that we can together overcome crime,” AIP Uwambaye said.

“You should also desist from aiding illegal and criminal activities but help your communities in maintaining peace and safety for both lives and property.”

AIP Jean Pierre Dusingizimana dwelt her message to the motorists on road safety and also thanked them for their continued cooperation with the police in crime prevention.

“For you to run an effective business you need to be secure; we are here to partner in this quest of making our communities crime-free. Rwanda National Police and the public recognize and highly appreciate the great job you do especially in the transport sector. So ride responsibly for your own safety and that of others,” Dusingizimana said.

Speaking on behalf of fellow motorcyclists, the president of KODUAGI, an association of Motorcyclists in Gisagara, Innocent Banguwiha asked his colleagues to heed Police advice.

“We are committed to help Police during investigations by providing information on suspicious cases in communities; and also offer no compromise to criminals who employ services of motorcyclists,” Banguwiha said.

RNP continuously reaches out to commercial motorcyclists with messages on community safety and encourages them to embrace working in cooperatives, best way to improve their well-being.

The force also supports their development by providing financial support through their cooperatives in order to help them develop and streamline their profession.
