Gisagara: Man arrested for alleged bribery

Police in Gisagara District arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly attempting to bribe traffic Police officers to prevent penalties over traffic related offences.

The suspect detained at Save Police station had attempted to offer a bribe of Rwf50, 000 after he was found riding a motorcycle without a driver's license.

"Traffic officers stopped the suspect in Save Sector, Shyanda Cell in Mukoni Village for their routine traffic control duties; they found he had no driver's license, among other traffic-related documents," Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Southern region Police spokesperson, said.

“The officers penalised him as the law specifies including impounding the motorcycle; instead of doing exactly what he was required to do before getting his motorcycle, he followed the officers and tried to seduce them with Rwf50, 000, they immediately took him into custody," he added.

He advised that the only way to "avoid being in conflict with the law is to always comply with the laws and doing the right thing."

“Where an offence has been committed, adhere to what the law provides; if you are required to pay a fine, do so, fix the problem and move on with your businesses, rather than a shortcut that would eventually put you in serious troubles,” advised CIP Karekezi.

He explained that corruption has diverse effects not only on individuals, but also to the country since it affects service delivery, the economy and translates to slow development.
