Reverien Niringiyimana, a commercial mortorcyclist operating in Gisagara District, is detained at Ndora Police Station following his arrest after he was found trafficking about 5kgs of cannabis.
The 52 year old was arrested on Saturday in Nyerezi Cell in Gishubi Sector at around 9 PM, police said.
"We received information from residents about Niringiyimana criminal dealings. On Saturday about 9pm, he was intercepted and when they checked the small bag he had, they found that it was filled with cannabis weighing 5kgs. He was immediately arrested," Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Southern Region Police Spokesperson, said.
“The substance (cannabis) and many other types of narcotic drugs pose life imperiling effects including mainly mental disabilities. We have seen that, narcotic drugs affect mostly the youth including students. We commend the role the public continue to play to arrest such drug traffickers and to ensure a drug-free society," Kayigi said.
He called on Rwandans to invest in other profitable legal ventures and shun illicit business which at some point land them into avoidable unnecessary troubles like imprisonment.
Article 594 of Rwandan Penal Code stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three (3) years to five (5) years and a fine of five hundred thousand (500,000) to five million (5,000,000) Rwandan francs.
