Police in Gisagara District have reminded residents of Ndora Sector to fight the common crime of drug abuse in the area and urged abusers to refrain from the hazardous act.
Gisagara District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Marie Chantal Uwambaye, told the residents that by keeping quiet or hiding drug dealers and abusers, they will be abetting insecurity in their communities brought about by use of illicit drugs like cannabis, gins like kanyanga, chief and zebra waragi, among others.
“By preventing suppliers, we will also be preventing consumption and consequently preventing other crimes like theft, domestic and gender based violence, which it brings along, and promoting community safety and family harmony,” said IP Uwambaye.
The gathering was mainly composed of the majority youth, who were also urged to take a lead in crime prevention and drug abuse in particular.
“In some cases, crimes such as robbery, pick pocketing, assault, house break-ins, rape and defilement are committed by people who are under influence of drugs that’s why, if we are to address these crimes, we need to first stamp out drugs, while requires collective ownership and response” she said.
One of the attendants, Fortunée Yabaragiye told her colleagues that, “Although Rwanda National Police is charged with ensuring public safety, we need to take a lead in ensuring our communities are free from any sort of crime.”
