Gicumbi: Two arrested for attempted bribery

Two people, who attempted to bribe Police officers in Gicumbi District were arrested on Thursday.

The suspects had attempted to give a bribe of Rwf250, 000.

According to Chief Inspector of Police  (CIP) Alex Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, the bribe was meant to seduce the officers to release the wife of one of the suspects, who was arrested recently for drug trafficking.

The wife was taken into custody in after she was found in possession of 597 rolls of cannabis.

"The husband of this woman called the officer at Byumba Police station, where the wife is detained, requesting to meet," CIP Rugigana said.

"He instead sent a colleague with Rwf250, 000 to give to the officer in question so as to release the wife. The man who was sent with the money was immediately taken into custody, and the prime suspect was also located and arrested too."

CIP Rugugana advised the general public to "do the right thing" not to engage into criminal activities. He added that offering bribes will only be another crime committed and answerable in courts of law.

More that 200 people have been arrested this year for attempting to give bribes to Police officers.

Over 1000 people have been arrested since 2015.

The law against corruption especially in its article 4, provides an imprisonment of between five and seven years upon conviction, and a fine of three to ten times the bribe offered or solicited.
