Police in partnership with the members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in Gicumbi District, on Saturday, launched a community outreach exercise to  to construct houses for the less privileged families in Cyumba and Bwisige sectors.

During the exercise, the youth volunteers laid bricks that will be used to construct the houses

They also levelled a football pitch to serve as a sports practicing ground for the young people in the area.

The creation of the football pitch, according to the Youth Volunteers, is meant to support sports development in the district and to prevent the young people from engaging in malpractices like abusing drugs, among others.

The exercise was also attended by the vice mayor for Gicumbi in charge of Social Affairs, Elizabeth Mujyawamariya.

Mujyawamariya thanked the young people for thinking and supporting those in need.

The Vice mayor hailed the collaborative relationship that exists between communities and law enforcers and urged the youth to be at the forefront to sustain the registered achievements.

She called for partnership in sensitising residents on issues of good nutrition, fighting the sale and abuse of illicit drugs.
 
Mujyawamariya appealed to residents to maintain proper health wellbeing by avoiding habits that may put lives at health risks such as excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse

She urged them to be alert against Ebola and work with health workers to sensitise the people on its symptoms and preventive measures.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alex Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said that the youth activities contribute to development and fighting
lawlessness.

“These are continuous activities to support but also engage residents in fighting crime, we have held similar activities in Gakenke and Rulindo districts and we intend to reach all communities in the whole region engaging local leaders and residents,” said CIP Rugigana.

He explained that at the end of each activities, they engage with residents to discuss matters of common interest to communities such as good feeding, economic development, maintaining peace and security and Gerayo Amahoro campaign to educate the public on safe usage of road.
