GICUMBI: Police seize 20kgs of cannabis from dealer

A suspected drug dealer was arrested by the Police in Gicumbi District on Sunday, September 3, with 20kgs of cannabis.

The 20-year old suspect was intercepted at about 9p.m, in Mugote village, Gishali cell of Rubaya sector, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Jean Bosco Mwiseneza, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region.

He said: "The suspect was intercepted by members of security organs on night patrol as he crossed into Rwanda from Uganda, through a porous border point in Mugote village, Rubaya sector.

The suspect tried to flee after dropping a sack of cannabis, but security personnel pursued and apprehended him. He was handed over to RIB for further investigations."

The suspect is one of many drug traffickers and local dealers who have been arrested in strengthened operations to break chains of supply.

Gicumbi alongside Kirehe, Rubavu, Rusizi and other districts on borderlines are mapped as major trafficking routes, and most of the dealers have been arrested there.

Cannabis is listed among "very severe narcotic drugs" in Rwanda with a sentence ranging from 20 years to life, if convicted, and a fine of up to Frw30 million, under article 263 of the law determining offences and penalties in general.
