Police in Gicumbi District have intercepted and impounded a vehicle that was trafficking different types of contrabands allegedly trafficked into the country through an illegal border.
According to the District Police Commander, Supt. Gaston Karagire, the Ugandan registered vehicle registration number UAD 169 M, Toyota Corolla type, was intercepted on the night of June 7 in Gacurabwenge Cell of Byumba Sector.
“We received information from residents about the car that was loaded with illicit gin; we immediately acted on the information and mounted an operation, but the traffickers on noticing the police from a distance, ran away leaving the vehicle and the substances behind,” the DPC said.
“When we searched it, we recovered 80 dozens of Kitoko Waragi, four big sacks full of Chief Waragi, 40 dozens of Kick Waragi and and Kanyanga. We have since impounded the vehicle to Byumba police station as investigations proceed to find all those connected to this criminal act,” he added.
He thanked residents for their continued cooperation in reporting those involved in drug dealings.
“The fight against drug abuse requires strong partnership at all levels because when everyone acts responsibly and owns this fight, drug dealers will have no room for their illegal business and even whoever tries will be arrested,” Supt. Karagire said.
Residents in each of the 21 Sectors of Gicumbi formed an anti-illicit gin club as a collective effort to combat the vice and to break the supply chain that uses the area as one of the major transit routes.
