Gicumbi: Police impound vehicle loaded with illicit gin

A vehicle loaded with 320 dozens (3840 sachets) of Zebra gin was intercepted on Tuesday in Gicumbi District along Gatuna-Kigali highway.

The gin is classified as narcotics in Rwanda.

The impounded vehicle; Toyota Corolla plate number RAA 994N was being driven by one Cedrick Mugambira, 30, who was also taken into custody, Chief inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said.

"When members of the public called the Police in Gicumbi about a vehicle that was loaded with boxes of illicit gin and headed to Kigali, police was quick to respond," CIP Rugigana said.

“At about 11:30pm, the driver attempted to deviate to a remote road after noticing a Police snapcheck following credible information provided by members of the public," he added.

"The driver took the road to Kinyami trading centre but he was pursued and intercepted in Kinyami Cell, Rukomo Sector," the spokesperson said.

The suspect was handed over Rwanda Investigation Bureau(RIB), he said.

He thanked members of the public, who exercised their community policing rights and called for continued information sharing on drug dealers.

“We call upon the public to take the lead in this fight by giving us information on the dealers; many dealers have been arrested and strengthened community policing efforts will go a long way to break chains of supply," he said.
