Gicumbi: Illicit brew destroyed

Thousands of liters of illicit brew, both locally made and trafficked into the country, were destroyed today in Gicumbi district in a bid to rid the country of the dangerous brew that has a negative impact on both individuals and societies.

Police conducted a public destruction of the seized packaged brew in Mulindi cell of Kaniga sector in Gicumbi District.

District Police Commander (DPC), Senior Supt. (SSP), Felix Bizimana attended the event, alongside Stanislas Kagenzi, the Vice Mayor in charge of Economy, who urged residents to abstain from consumption of drugs and illicit brew but instead invest in economic and development activities.

SSP Bizimana also urged them to be innovative and avoid peer pressure destructions that derail them from their education and ambitions.

He said the destroyed brew was seized in targeted operations in various parts of the district in the two past months.

“These drugs were trafficked into the country through porous borders.  Those individuals that are connected to the destroyed drugs were apprehended and prosecuted. We urge the public to desist from such,” he said.

“The effects associated with the vice are enormous. Fighting the trade and consumption of such illicit drugs should not be regarded as police role but the role of every responsible citizen.”

He told those who attended the exercise that such drugs fuel crimes including assault, theft and gender-based crimes.

He also cited school drop-outs, unwanted pregnancies and early parenthood among others negative effects associated with the vice.
