Gicumbi: Head-teachers challenged on security in schools

Head-teachers in Gicumbi District have been urged to preserve security especially for school materials.

The call was made on Saturday by the Northern Region Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jean Baptiste Ntaganira, while addressing 124 head of schools in Gicumbi.

The meeting was also attended by the Vice Mayor of Gicumbi in charge of Social Affairs, Elizabeth Mujawamariya and officials in charge of education at the district and sector levels.

ACP Ntaganira reminded the mentors that security within their respective schools is equally their responsibility.

The meeting follows series of theft of computers in various schools in Gicumbi. About 136 computers have been stolen in schools over time.

“The security of your schools must be equally your priority; lay measures to prevent such theft," ACP Ntaganira said.

“The theft of those computers is unacceptable, it's a loss to the government and affects the education system it would be unfortunate if you are not concerned," the RPC said.

He urged them to install alarm systems and CCTV cameras to detect and deter thieves.

The RPC also urged them to hire professional security guards.

In some cases, security guards have been implicated in the theft.

ACP Ntaganira also hinted on the issue of illicit drugs and appealed to head-teachers to take up the campaign in their schools to fight the vice which is common among the young people including students.

The Vice Mayor Elizabeth Mujawamariya also reminded the head teachers to "protect school materials in order to avoid any kind of loss."

"You have the responsibility of controlling ,on a daily basis, those materials and equipment. They are there to increase the quality of education you provide. Losing them will have immediate negative effect on education,” Mujawamariya said.

“Identify and address possible loopholes to guarantee the desired quality of education,” she added.

The head-teachers resolved to install alarm systems in their schools and to hire professional and able guards to prevent risks of theft.
