GERAYO AMAHORO: Police urges truck drivers to prioritize road safety

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Friday, October 10, urged over 200 truck drivers in Nyarugenge and Kamonyi districts to uphold the highest standards of discipline and responsibility.

While addressing the drivers, Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety Department, underlined the importance of safe driving practices, especially given the risks associated with trucks.

“Trucks are essential to our economy, serving as the backbone for the transportation of goods across regions and international borders. They facilitate the smooth operation of businesses and ensure that communities receive vital supplies, thereby supporting both local and national markets,” SP Kayigi said.

“However, because of the size and weight of the vehicles you operate, your actions on the road have a significant impact not just on traffic flow, but also on public safety. A single mistake can lead to tragic consequences," he added.

SP Kayigi outlined key safety practices truck drivers must follow to prevent accidents and protect lives.

“Over speeding and sudden braking are among the leading causes of accidents involving large vehicles. These behaviors must be avoided,” he warned. “Every traffic sign and road signal is placed with a purpose, and we urge you to respect and follow them without exception.”

He further cautioned against driving under fatigue, sick, or distracted, especially by mobile phones, and stressed the importance of mental readiness and emotional control.

“Driving while tired, sick, or under stress greatly reduces your ability to make safe decisions on the road. Have enough rest before long trips and seek medical help when needed,” SP Kayigi said. “Never allow anger or frustration to influence your behavior on the road.”

He also highlighted the dangers of overloading, driving under poor weather conditions, and substance abuse, noting that such factors contribute significantly to road accidents.
