Rwanda National Police (RNP), in partnership with the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) and the City of Kigali, on Thursday, August 7, conducted a sensitization campaign on responsible road use for more than 1,800 taxi-moto operators in Nyarugenge District.

Gerayo Amahoro campaign promotes road safety by emphasizing the importance of obeying traffic laws, maintaining professionalism, and prioritizing safety to protect lives.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Fabien Musinguzi, the Deputy Commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety, addressed the motor-taxi operators on shared responsibility on the road. 
“From home to work and from work to home, everyone wishes to arrive safely,” he said. “You should always be aware that many people use roads, and ensuring safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

He urged the motorcyclists to ride responsibly by regulating speed, refraining from riding under the influence of alcohol, and adhering strictly to traffic rules.

“There is no replacement for your physical well-being once it is harmed,” he added. “Reckless riding, hiding motorcycle plate numbers, and riding while unfit are dangerous. We also encourage hygiene, including riding clean motorcycles,not just in your attire, but also in your motorcycles," ACP Musinguzi said. 

Alexis Ingangare, the District Executive Administrator for Nyarugenge, called on motorcyclists to take pride in their transport profession by embracing discipline and contributing to the safety and cleanliness of Kigali.

“Gerayo Amahoro programme is all about your safety but also cleanliness. Let us all prioritize road safety as a culture," Ingangare said.

He also encouraged the riders to adopt modern, approved helmets and to invest in their health and future by joining community-based health insurance programmes such as Mutuelle de Santé and Ejo Heza.

Christine Akigeneye, the Tax Motor Senior Officer for Motorcycle Transport at RURA, highlighted the critical need for adherence to road traffic regulations, including having the required documents like driver's license, insurance and transport authorization.

“These documents allows you to operate legally,” she noted. “When applying for any transport document, always provide your accurate identity. If you sell your motorcycle, be sure to carry out the official transfer of ownership to avoid being held accountable for illegal acts done by the new owner.”
