Gerayo Amahoro: Police remind road users to respect traffic rules

Police have reminded all categories of road users to mind their safety while using the road.

They were also cautioned against inappropriate and dangerous use of road which results into fatal accidents.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety, said that the ongoing national Gerayo Amahoro--arrive safely--campaign is creating impact, but added that there are some drivers whose behaviours continue to cause accidents and loss of lives.

"The month of June was dedicated to educating motorists against driving while drunk, we are seeing impact although there are some few drivers who still go on the wheel while drunk, which is dangerous to people on board and other road users," SSP Ndushabandi said.

On Friday, Police in Kamonyi District intercepted a driver in Runda Sector, who was driving while drunk.

According to SSP Ndushabandi, the driver identified as Alphonse Nsengiyumva was tested and found to have alcohol content of 5.20 degrees which far exceeds the recommended limits of 0.8.

"The driver was detained and released the following day after being fined. This driver was reported by a concerned pedestrian who observed how he was driving on the wrong side of the road," SSP Ndushabandi said.

He emphasised the importance of every road user in preventing accidents.

"Gerayo Amahoro is a national road safety campaign whose aim is to change the behavior and attitude of all road users.

Through this campaign, Rwanda National Police emphasizes the role of every road user in preventing accidents through respecting traffic rules. Road users are encouraged to report offenders, to avoid driving when drunk, respecting pedestrian crosswalks and as a passenger feeling the responsibility of ensuring that your driver is not using a phone and doing anything that puts your life in danger."
