Rwanda National Police (RNP) continued its nationwide Gerayo Amahoro road safety campaign by engaging with students at Gihinga Primary School in the Gacurabwenge Sector of Kamonyi District on Tuesday, June 10.
Road safety awareness in schools highlights the significance of early education in cultivating a culture of responsible road usage among young learners.
The campaign follows a similar campaign held on May 4 in Gisagara District, where students from E.S. Mamba were also educated on safer road usage.
The outreach in schools emphasizes safe pedestrian practices and other traffic regulations.
Speaking to the students at Gihinga Primary School, Superintendent of police (SP) Emmanuel Habiyaremye, RNP spokesperson for the Southern Region, reiterated the importance of using the road safely to prevent accidents and loss of lives.
“This campaign is not just a slogan; it is a promise and a responsibility that we all share to protect lives on our roads,” the spokesperson said.

“As children, we teach you these road traffic rules to make you safe because you are the future of Rwanda. You are also among the most vulnerable road users. That is why you need to learn from a young age how to use the road properly and safely.”
Children were guided on key safety tips, including safer use of zebra crossing, walking on sidewalks, avoiding playing near or in the middle of the road, and using public transport responsibly.
“These lessons are not only for today,” the spokesperson added. “You must practice them every day and also teach your younger brothers and sisters. Road safety is not only the responsibility of police officers or drivers—it starts with you, with every step you take on the road.”
“The reason we extend the Gerayo Amahoro campaign to children is simple: because your lives matter. By teaching road safety early, we are protecting you today and building safer generations for tomorrow.”
The Gerayo Amahoro campaign was also extended to the taxi motor operators, cyclists, and pedestrians in various districts of the Southern province, namely Kamonyi, Huye, Nyanza, and Nyamagabe.
