Gerayo Amahoro: Police, driving schools to sensitize students on road safety

Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the association of owners of driving schools (ANPAER) have embarked on conducting joint awareness campaign in primary and secondary schools to educate students on road safety.

The partnership was formalised this Monday during the meeting that brought together the two entities, held at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

The road safety education in schools aims to prepare and equip this segment of road users with the knowledge, skills and enlist positive attitudes that will enable them stay safe and become responsible road users.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Rafiki Mujiji, the commissioner for Traffic and Road Safety department said that the collaborative framework will enlighten the young people in schools on traffic rules and how safe to use the road.

“Road safety education plays a vital role in shaping the attitude and behavior of children as well as young people, thereby ensuring that they become responsible future drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists,” CP Mujiji said.

He noted that Road safety education is very much essential in today's world as road traffic is becoming increasingly busy and one of the leading cause of death, compared to the past.

CP Mujiji said the public should participate in safety programmes, which will make it more effective and successful when basic road safety education is provided early in primary and secondary schools.

The meeting was also attended by regional police spokespersons and the in-charge Traffic across the country.

It noted that behavioral change through public education is the most effective method to influence the conduct of motorists, pedestrians and students in particular.

The campaign to be conducted in schools countrywide is part of the year-long Gerayo Amahoro launched in May to influence behavioural change among all segments of road users on safe usage of road.
