As part of the ongoing Gerayo Amahoro road safety campaign, on Friday, December 23, Police sensitized more than 600 commercial cyclists operating in Kimironko and Bumbogo sectors on how safe to use the road to prevent road carnage.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, told the cyclists to change their reckless behaviors and attitude on road, which is one of the major causes of road accidents.
"Do not ride when you drink, avoid using a phone when you are riding because it distracts you leading to accident and likely loss of lives," CIP Twajamahoro told the cyclists.
At least 183 fatal accidents recorded since the beginning of the year involved cyclists.
CIP Twajamahoro further reminded them that their transport operations end at 6p.m and urged them to observe it.
The cyclists were also urged to always park at designated or safer spots.
Some cyclists park in the road, in corners and other dangerous areas. Others carry heavy luggage sometimes long that it obstructs traffic flow.
CIP Twajamahoro appealed to them to ensure personal hygiene and to work with the Police to fight and prevent crimes through timely information sharing.
