Rwanda National Police (RNP) extended Gerayo Amahoro road safety awareness to over 2200 motor-taxi operators in the Southern and Western provinces.
The two separate road safety campaigns were conducted on August 20th and 21st in Nyanza and Rusizi districts, respectively, as part of the efforts to influence behavior change and make roads safer for all.
The campaign focused on promoting responsible road use, encourage compliance with traffic regulations, and reduce accidents resulting from negligence or misconduct on roads.
Addressing the motorcyclists, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Vincent Habintwari, the Deputy Commissioner in the Traffic and Road Safety Department in charge of commercial motorcyclists, reminded riders of their crucial role in safeguarding lives.
“Motorcyclists play a big role in transporting people, but you must also think of protecting lives first. Your work should be done professionally, with discipline and cleanliness, while respecting traffic laws so that your job benefits you, your families, and the nation at large,” CSP Habintwari said.

He cautioned against common offenses such as illegal parking, overloading, disorderly conduct at accident scenes, working excessive hours leading to fatigue, speeding, reckless maneuvers and operating without valid traffic documents.
“We want you to operate with pride, transparency, and respect for traffic laws. Respect zebra crossings, avoiding overloading, wear helmets, and always complete legal ownership transfers of your motorcycle.”
The Acting Mayor of Nyanza District, Kajyambere Patrick, thanked the Police for the collaboration and urged motorcyclists to uphold professionalism and contribute to reducing road accidents.
“We value this partnership with the Rwanda National Police. Motorcyclists must take the lead in preventing accidents by showing professionalism and discipline. This is not only about safety but also about improving your livelihoods and contributing to the national development.”
In Rusizi District, the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Habimana Alfred, encouraged riders to embrace the campaign as a means of protecting both their lives and those of fellow road users.
“This campaign is an opportunity you should not waste. Your lives and those of the passengers you transport depend on how responsibly you use the road. By respecting traffic rules, you protect yourself, your customers, and the entire community.”
The Gerayo Amahoro campaign is expected to be conducted across all districts of the country to sensitize moto-taxi operators to prioritize road safety and safeguard lives while also contributing to national security and development.
