The month of July is dedicated to infrastructure protection and shall involve erecting road safety signposts, repainting pedestrian walks and establishing new ones where they don't exist and yet required.

The second week of the campaign will focus in the City of Kigali and the Western Province before shifting to other regions.

On Tuesday, Police and partners created more pedestrian crosswalks and repainted fading ones especially in hotspots like towns, trading centers and schools as well as erecting signposts in different roads.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorette Umutesi, the central region police spokesperson dwelt most on encouraging students to always use sidewalks and crosswalks .

“When crossing a road, you must look left and right at all times. Where there are traffic lights, you must abide by the instructions; this is how you will ensure your individual safety,” CIP Umutesi said.

“You have to cross the road using crosswalks where there are, be attentive and wait to be sure that you are sure, before crossing the road. Use the left side of the road while walking,” she reiterated.

Following a length tutor on road safety, students were taken to the main road and where they acquainted with physical training on road usage.

Joselyne Mukamwiza one of those who help students of GS Kagugu to cross the road said what she intend to experience after the campaign.

“Primary students are general young and use the road recklessly. The campaign came to facilitate my work because I expect to be dealing with students who already have basic knowledge on road usage. We will no longer have accidents that involve students as we used to have,” she said.

She added that she thanks Rwanda National Police for teaching young people for they will grow up knowing how to properly use the road.

“We wish all students around the country be reached so that they can learn and change the way they use roads,” added Mukamwiza.

Bertin Cyuzuzo a primary 4 student said what he learnt from the campaign.

“They taught us how to cross the road, they said we have to look on our right and left and wait enough before crossing the road to avoid accidents. I advise may colleagues to follow the instructions so that they can reach their home safely,” Cyuzuzo said.

The exercise is in a bid to further sensitize road users on road safety standards with an objective of  enhancing public knowledge on traffic rules and regulations with a view to prevent accidents and dangers of violation of traffic rules in Gerayo Amahoro campaign drive.
