The District Police Unit (DPU) of Gatsibo intercepted a vehicle on Saturday loaded with about 200 boxes of African buffalo gin, which is classified as psychotropic substance in Rwanda.
The Ugandan registered omnibus; UAY 771H was enroute to Kigali when it was impounded at about 4pm in Kabarore Sector, Police said.
It was impounded to Kabarore Police station, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobard Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said.
"The driver identified as Stephen Kazoora, 46, the only person on board at the time, was also taken into custody," CIP Kanamugire said.
"Earlier that very afternoon the DPU of Gatsibo had received information about yhe vehicle that was headed towards Kayonza and loaded with contraband," he explained.
"The informer was specific on the type of vehicle and its number plate, so this made it easier to coordinate the operation to intercept the vehicle, seize the contrabands and arrest the drug trafficker," the spokesperson said.
This comes at the time when the fight against drugs in the Eastern Province is gaining momentum.
Faith based organizations headed by the Bishop of Gahini Rt. Rev. Alexis Birindabagabo have over the past few weeks been moving from one sector to another in Gatsibo and Nyagatare districts raising awareness and supplementing national against the vice.
Increased Police operations conducted in the two districts alone in the last three months also seized contrabands valued at over Rwf20 million.
Breaking chains of supply and preventing new users through increased awareness is among the major priorities of Rwanda National Police (RNP) to address one of the problem.
