Policing groups in Gatsibo District met on February 20 and discussed joint measures to fight and prevent the vice of illicit drugs that are still common in the district.
The meeting chaired by the mayor of Gatsibo, Richard Gasana brought together members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing, local night patrols, Community Policing Committees and district administrative security personnel (DASSO).
Present was also the District Police Commander of Gatsibo, Supt. Patrick Butera.
Mayor Gasana noted that concerted efforts of all the policing groups can create change, but observed that they are still working separately although aiming for same goal.
The DPC, on his part, said that illicit drugs is still one of the major security concerns that requires immediate response.
The meeting talked on the role of community policing groups and the general public in fighting psychotropic substances, ill-effects of abusing drugs and the impact of information sharing in fighting the vice and other security issues.
The meeting was also followed by the public destruction of illicit drugs worth over Rwf3.5 million.
The disposed of substances include over 11000 sachets of Zebra gin.
The substances were seized in various operations in Gatsibo.
