The Eastern Regional Police Commander (RPC), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benoit S. Kayijuka has called upon commercial motorcyclists operating in Gatsibo to have a “security conscience” as they go about their daily transport business.
The RPC made the call on September 27 while addressing over 150 motorcyclists in Kabarore Sector.
“You have multiple roles in the country’s development; hard work, working with others in security and development activities,” ACP Kayijuka told the motorcyclists.
Present was also the district director of Good Governance, Yvette Dusenge and Daniel Ngarambe, the president of Ferwacotamo—the federation of motorcycle cooperatives in Rwanda, among others.
The RPC reminded the motorcyclists that discipline and respect of law, rules and regulations as well as having a deep sense of patriotism are essential towards individual and collective response against criminality or lawlessness.
He hinted on the issue of drug trafficking and road accidents as threats to lives and the social wellbeing.
About 70 percent of road accidents registered in the country either involve or are caused by motorcyclists. Equally, trafficking, making or use of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances remains a serious concern in the country and commercial motorcyclists have been sighted as one of the traffickers or facilitate traffickers either as informers or to transport their illegal luggage.
“The work you do should facilitate the wellbeing of every Rwandan but not to affect their social life,” ACP Kayijuka. “As transporters, be the guardians of the people you transport… they should be safe with you. Also remember that transporting narcotics or facilitating dealers is destroying the health of the people for own greed.”
He urged them to report people including their own, involved in drug related crimes, smuggling but also avoid tendencies of corruption and bribery in particular.
Ngarambe also warned of consequences to every member of the motorcycle federation that will be implicated in criminal activities including expelling them from the transport business.
