Gatsibo: Man arrested for stealing 30 goats

Police in Gatsibo District arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly stealing 30 goats.

The suspect identified as Emmanuel Ntirenganya was arrested on March 31, and currently held at Rwimbogo Police station.

The Eastern region Police spokesperson Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Hamdun Twizeyimana confirmed the developments and said the suspect was apprehended following a tip-off by members of the community.

He explained that the victim identified as Fred Asiimwe, a resident of Rwimbogo Sector, Nyamatete Cell reported the theft case of missing goats, to local authorities who informed police and a search began thereafter.

It is alleged the suspect found the goats grazing in a nearby bush in the Rwiminazi village and herded them away.

“Officers reacted to information provided by residents and went to the home of the suspect where the victim was able to identify his goats,” said CIP Twizeyimana.

He further explained that the ownership of the animals was also confirmed by area local leaders and the victim’s neighbours.

The suspect will be charged under section two, article 166 which states that “any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one (1) year and not more than two (2) years and a fine of not less than one million Rwandan francs (FRW 1,000,000) and not more than two million Rwandan francs (FRW 2,000,000), community service in a period of six (6) months or only one of these penalties.
