Gatsibo local leaders challenged on crime prevention

Local leaders in Gatsibo district have been challenged to actively involve and work with residents to detect, fight and prevent crimes.

This was during a meeting on June 12 that brought together sector executive secretaries, district authorities, Police and officials from National Electoral Commission (NEC) held at Ngarama sector.

Inspector of Police, Canisius Rutikanga, the District Community Liaison Officer outlined illicit brews like Kanyanga, Chief Waragi as some of the illegal acts that should be given much emphasis.

He explained that such illicit drugs are the major cause of other crimes like assault, domestic violence, child abuse, theft and domestic and gender-based crimes.

He also cited school drop-outs and unwanted pregnancies as other consequences of consumption of illicit drugs.

Inspector Rutikanga appealed to the leaders to increase their campaigns against crimes, work closely with residents, tighten their night patrols and report offenders in time.

Marie Jeanne Manirakiza, a NEC official appealed to the leaders to lead by example and be patriotic.
