Local leaders in Gatsibo district have been called upon to embrace community policing initiatives and work with Rwanda National Police (RNP) in promoting security and safety in their communities.
The message was delivered on June 22 during a meeting in Kabarore Sector where Rwanda National Police (RNP) officers met with 69 Cell leaders of Gatsibo District to discuss about fostering cooperation in the fight against crimes especially gender-based violence and drug abuse which are common.
The meeting which also attracted residents from the district was officially opened by the Mayor of Gatsibo, Richard Gasana, who urged the local leaders to always be available to the needs of residents and disseminate timely information, in order to overcome crime and lawlessness in society.
“As leaders who are trusted by the people, you need to have a strong partnership with police to effectively reduce and ultimately prevent crime your communities. It takes all of us to work as a group and denounce criminal activities such as gender based violence and drug abuse,” he said.
“Criminals are always seeking to find loopholes to use in order to carry out their destructive activities – but for a safer community, we need to trust Police with credible information that will help them in making our community safer and to fight against such criminals.”
The District Community Liaison Police Officer of Gatsibo, Inspector of Police Roger Rwakayiro, told participants that Rwanda’s steadfast development is hinged on sustainable peace, which should be protected through a strong partnership between the public and law enforcement agencies.
“All entities in private and public sectors be it in schools, business communities or neighborhoods, should work together on providing analyses of criminal gangs that promote drug abuse among the youth and those that commit gender based crimes,” he said.
“Working together with police will open up opportunities for everyone to have meaningful roles in their communities by preventing crime and improving the collective sense of security and quality of life.”
