Gasabo: Woman arrested over attempted bribery

Police in Gisozi, Gasabo District are holding one Theopiste Mukankusi for allegedly attempting to offer bribes to influence the release of her husband.

Her husband was arrested on May 31, in Gasave Cell in Gisozi Sector over fraud.

Mukankusi was at the time of her arrest on June 3, trying to offer a bribe of Rwf47, 000, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police Spokesperson in the City of Kigali.

"There is no tolerance to any acts of corruption, it's a high impact crime that we give due attention," SSP Hitayezu said.

"Giving or receiving a bribe is a criminal act that also affects service delivery. It denies service to those that are supposed to have it or gives service to those that are not supposed to have it," he added.

He warned the general public against such criminal acts and called for real time information sharing on anyone at all levels, suspected to be involved in solicing or giving bribes or any form of graft.

Article 641 of the penal code stipulates that, any person who explicitly or implicitly offers, proposes directly or indirectly a gift or any other illegal benefit, to a person in charge of a service, mission or mandate or who promises it in order to render a service or to refrain from carrying out any usual duties, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than five to seven years and a fine of twice to ten times the value of what was offered in bribes.

The arrest comes at the time when Rwanda National Police is conducting a week-long campaign against corruption.

The campaign launched on Monday is a joint effort with other entities that include prosecution, Office of Ombudsman, Rwanda Investigations Bureau, Rwanda Governance Board and Transparency International Rwanda.
