A man identified as Eric Hakizimana, 22, was arrested on Wednesday October 18, in Gasabo District, Rusororo Sector after breaking into a shoe store, where he allegedly stole Frw119,000.
The money was recovered from Hakizimana, an employee at the shoe making cooperative in Rusororo, where he stole it after vandalizing the doors at about midnight.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali said that Hakizimana first tricked a security guard into leaving the store before breaking into the shop and stealing the money.
"Hakizimana went back to the shoe store where he works, at about midnight, tricked the security guard to go and get him a phone charger. On his return, the security guard found the doors to the shop and office vandalized and open, and Hakizimana was nowhere to be seen," CIP Twajamahoro said.
The security guard immediately reported the burglary to his employers, who in turn called the Police that night.
"Hakizimana, the prime suspect, was located as he returned home, searched and found with Frw119000, which he allegedly stole that night, took him into custody for the alleged crime and handed over to RIB at Rusororo station," CIP Twajamahoro said.
Article 166 of law determining offences and penalties in general states that; any person convicted of theft is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than one (1) year and not more than two (2) years and a fine of not less than Frw1 million and not more than Frw2 million, community service in a period of six (6) months or only one of these penalties.
In article 167, the penalty for theft doubles if the offender committed the crime through burglary, climbing or possession of keys other than the owner; the theft is carried out during the night or the theft is carried out by more than one (1) person.
