Police in Gasabo District have arrested a man in connection with stealing at least four pre-paid cashpower meters.
Thierry Nizeyimana, 42, was arrested on November 26 in Rusororo Sector.
Nizeyimana was caught red-handed with the electricity meters, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.
CIP Kayigi said that Nizeyimana, earlier that morning, allegedly sneaked into a site in Kabuga I of Rusororo Sector where the government is relocating families, and stole the cashpower meter boxes and other construction materials.
“He also stole doors, windows and iron sheets, among other materials. Residents, who saw him helped the Police to locate and arrest him, and to recover the stolen items,” CIP Kayigi said.
He thanked the residents who called the Police after witnessing the theft act, and called for continued neighborhood watch to fight all sorts of criminal acts.
Theft, under article 166 of the new penal code, is punishable with an imprisonment of between one and two years and a fine of not less than Rwf1 million but not more than Rwf2 million, and a community service of not more than six months or one of these penalties.
