Students of Gihogwe Secondary School located in Agateko Cell of Jali Sector in Gasabo District, have made fresh commitment to fight trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs.
The commitment was made recently during their meeting that mainly focused on how to strengthen their anti-crime clubs in raising awareness and fighting drug abuse, child abuse and gender based violence.
There are about 2600 anti-crime clubs across the country, majority in schools.
The meeting was also attended by the District Community Liaison Officer of Gasabo, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Irene Umuhozari.
Drug abuse is one of the serious security issues that have seen different public and private institutions joining Rwanda National Police in holistic approach efforts to prevent new users, rehabilitate addicts and ensure that dealers are arrested to face justice.
While addressing the students,
CIP Umuhozari commended them for their community policing efforts to address the problem that affects mainly their generation.
“The youth are the most victims of drug abuse. We have many cases where students at your age have been caught in drug related crimes including selling and consumption," she said.
"These are psychotropic substances that destroy lives of users; there are many addicts undergoing rehabilitation and others who dropped out of school due to these drugs," she added.
She asked them to concetrate on their studies, make good use of the anti-crime clubs and to report anyone they suspect to be involved in drug related crimes.
CIP urged them to always share information on such criminal activities with Police, teachers and local authority.
