GASABO: Former prostitutes and street vendors sensitized on crime prevention

Over 65 members of ABANYAMURAVA, a cooperative of former prostitutes and street vendors in Kimironko sector, Gasabo District were on July 30 sensitized on their role to advise fellow members practicing prostitution to leave such acts and engage in developmental practices

While speaking to the participants, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean d’amour Uwiringiyimana appealed to them to cooperate with communities in ensuring security.

As people who were formerly practicing such illegal acts, he urged them to always advise those still involved in prostitution to abscond so that they join cooperative like starting a savings scheme and report those that could be involved in any illegal or criminal act.

Mariana Nyirarukundo, a former prostitute for two years and now a hair dresser vowed to advise those that still practice to leave and instead start while participating in various development programmes like joining cooperatives, participating in Umuganda. She also urged other participants to be patriotic Rwandans, send their children to schools and subscribe medical insurance scheme like Mituelle.

Nyirarukundo talked about the consequences they face like being taken to prison, being beaten and sometimes assaults

She thanked Rwanda National Police for the message, promised never to go back to prostitution and to continue campaigning against such acts

Nyirarukundo is now a responsible woman taking good care of her two children
