Gasabo: Duo arrested over fraud

Police in Nduba Sector of Gasabo District are holding two people; Bosco Hamenyimana, 32, and Jackson Bayavuge, 36, for allegedly fleecing unwitting local residents of their money.

The duo arrested on Tuesday was threatening people who were constructing illegally. They would get money from them as means to prevent further action, Police said.

"Hamenyimana was masquerading as Nduba Sector engineer and they were demanding money from residents constructing without permits," Senior Superintended of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Central region Police spokesperson, said.

“They had been seen earlier taking photos of houses they said were built illegally and threatening owners to give them money or be reported to have their houses demolished," he added.

"When residents became suspicious they decided to report the matter to local authority and Police, and indeed it turned out that they were just fraudaters impersonating local authorities," the spokesperson explained.

In one of the cases, they fleeced Rwf100, 000 from a resident in Nyakabungo Village.

SSP Hitayezu thanked residents who availed information that led to arrest of the two suspects.

He called upon the general public to always be vigilant of such people and report those who attempt to solicit bribes.
