Gasabo CPCs challenged on crime prevention

Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Gasabo District have be urged to go beyond reporting crimes and focus more on the causes and how they can be prevented.

The call was made recently in a meeting that was presided over the commander of Rutunga Police Station Inspector of Police (IP) Laurent Mudacumura.

IP Mudacumura rallied them to play a lead role in identifying the root causes of the common crimes like gender based violence and trafficking in drugs.

This, he said, will help to deal with the root causes while breaking the supply chain of drugs.

“Effects of crimes like drug abuse go beyond just the consumer to the family and the community at large where family conflicts force children out of their homes and end up in a life of drugs. Majority of the crimes we record are linked other issues beyond just the offense committed,” said IP Mudacumura said as he addressed over 180 members of CPCs in Rutunga sector of Gasabo District.

He reminded them that they are influential in promoting law and order in communities by sensitizing their neighborhoods about the need to fight crime.

He urged them to be more vibrant in executing their responsibilities.

“You cannot work in isolation and expect remarkable results, and that’s why as police, we work with everyone but also count on you to work with the people to feel that gap where police can’t be at all times,” IP Mudacumura said.

The meeting was also attended by the Executive Secretary of Rutunga Sector, Jean de Dieu Ndayisabye, who emphasized that matters of security and safety are a responsibility of every Rwandans and told CPCs to take a lead in ensuring public safety.

He appealed to them to be people of integrity and exemplary in the society and that their reputation will earn them respect.
