About 400 youths attending vocational training at Yego Centre in Janja sector, Gakenke District were on Friday sensitized on the dangers of consuming illicit brew, narcotics and to be aware of people who try to lure young people especially girls into human trafficking by promising them better offers like jobs.
During the event which was also attended by hundreds of parents and area residents, Inspector of Police Alexandre Mwezi explained that making selling or consuming illicit drinks is punishable under Rwandan laws.
He explained to them the laws that punish dealers like article 594 of the penal code.
It states that any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
He urged them to take the lead to fight against the vice which is affecting mostly the young generation.
He urged them to share timely information on people involved, but also to be on watch out of individuals who try to seduce them with better offers to traffic them abroad for sexual exploitation and hard labour.
Deogratias Hakuziyaremye, the Director of Yego Vocational Centre echoed the need for the public and the youth in particular to be in control of the situation by being active in crime prevention.
