Gakenke to map-out drug dealers

Local authorities and security organs in Gakenke district have laid plans to further map-out people behind criminal activities such as drug abuse, to strengthen the fight against the vice in the district.

This is one of the measures devised to continue the campaign to improve security and safety in the district.

This was during a meeting with residents and students held Karambo sector on May 14, which was part of the community policing week which started on Monday, which started with a walk against crimes.

It was also attended by the vice mayor in charge of social affairs, Zephylin Ntakirutimana, DPC Senior Supt. Gilbert Ruhorahoza, head teachers and security organs.

It was convened to jointly look for ways to ensure security.

Residents also pledged to provide names of those connected to illegal acts and where they hide.

SSP Ruhorahoza thanked residents for their continued role in fighting crimes through provision of information, which has seen crimes going down.

“A drug addict cannot focus to their studies. If you dream of becoming someone important in the future, you need to say no to drugs and stay focused,” SSP Ruhorahoza told students.

He also cited domestic and gender-based crimes as other crimes that are still high that require collective efforts to combat them by identifying the affected families.

Ntakirutimana also urged residents to be an eye to neighbours and always report anything that can affect their safety and security.

The week-long exercise also includes anti-crime awareness in all parts of the district, sensitizing commercial motorcycle operators of road safety and crime prevention and training of Community Policing Committees (CPCs).
