Gakenke: Students acquire knowledge on road safety

Police in Gakenke district, on October 1 sensitized over one thousand students from four secondary schools in the district, on road safety signs and rules.

The students are from Nyarutovu College, APRODESC, ESI-Nemba1 and Ecole Secondaire de Ngazo.

The exercise started with a two kilometer stretch ‘road safety walk’ that was also attended by the district mayor, Deogratius Nzamwita, the District Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gilbert Ruhorahoza, drivers, commercial motorcycle operators and parents, among others.

Nzamwita urged students to be cautious when crossing or walking along the road to avoid being hit by vehicles or motorcycles.

SSP Ruhorahoza warned against recklessness of drivers and motorcyclists and appealed to students to use zebra crossing or look at either side of the road, before crossing.

“Teaching students about road usage enables them to know, at early age, the best ways of road safety to avoid being hit or killed by passing vehicles, motorcycles or bicycles,” SSP Ruhorahoza, said.

He reminded them that it’s there right to report bad drivers and call Police, RURA and transport company numbers contacts that are normally written on vehicles, to report such errant road users.

SSP Ruhorahoza, appealed to the school administrations to always teach pupils and students the meaning of road signs and to respect them.
