Police in Gakenke District have urged drivers, motorcyclists and cyclist to use the road safely to prevent road carnage which in most cases results from recklessness and violation of traffic rules and regulations.
The call was made by the District Police Commander (DPC) for Gakenke, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Viateur Ntiyamira, on Wednesday, while meeting the three categories of road users drawn from Rushashi and Ruli sectors.
The DPC particularly reminded motorcyclists and cyclists to always wear bright clothing or reflector jackets while on the road to avoid being hit especially at night.
He said Police have impounded several motorcycles involved in different malpractices including those whose riders were found with no driver’s license and drunken riding.
“Some of you drive or ride without driver’s license, insurance, transport authorization permits (for motorcyclists) and mechanical certificate (vehicles),” CIP Ntiyamira said.
He also warned them against speeding, bad maneuvers, using a phone while driving or riding.
CIP Ntiyamira also urged them to be active in community policing and assist the Police by sharing information on wrongdoers.
He said that every road user should exercise caution and play their respective roles to prevent fatalities and destruction of property
