Gakenke: Police join residents in Umuganda

Police in Gakenke District joined residents of Rusagara in Gakenke sector in Umuganda that mainly focused on environmental protection.

During the communal exercise that was also attended by district leaders headed by the mayor, Deogratias Nzamwita alongside the District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police Jean Berchmas  Dusengimana, over 3.5 hectares of terraces were prepared.

Close to 650 residents took part.

The Umuganda was conducted in a hilly area that experiences soil erosion especially in rainy season.

Mayor Nzamwita, while addressing residents shortly after Umuganda, urged them to protect the environment by taking measures against soil erosion and report people, who cut trees.

While commending police for enforcing environmental protection law and raising awareness on the same, the mayor noted that protecting the ecosystem is greatly a duty of everyone.

 He also urged them to be part and own the implementation of government development programmes including those related to security.

The DPC thanked the role of the residents is crime detection and prevention through information sharing.

“Fighting crimes including those related to environmental degradation is your duty, we are here to reinforce each other to ensure that safety and security become a guiding tool to everyone's well-being and development,” CIP Dusengimana said.

He also urged them to tighten night patrols and put much effort in fighting drug trafficking by reporting dealers.
