Rwanda National police (RNP) has confirmed one person has died due to a road accident involving a semi-truck vehicle after it went off the road and rammed into a nearby tree killing the driver on spot.
According to the police’s Road safety and traffic department spokesperson (SSP) Jean Marie Ndushabandi the accident occurred at 05hr30 on Monday morning in Gasenyi sector Nyakina cell, Ruhore village along Musanze Kigali highway.
The cause of the accidents was rash driving according to eye witnesses.
Police said the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle is 37-year-old man, a Tanzanian citizen identified as Bakari Ismail Kandanga who was driving vehicle registration number T 544 DEE was transporting rice.
“No other vehicles or people were involved in this crash” SSP Ndushabandi said.
The truck was going towards Musanze town when he reached a place known as Baase in Ruhore village; the vehicle went off the road killing him instantly.
Police Fire and rescue brigade officers cut through the wreckage to free the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
SSP Ndushabandi called upon drivers to be extra-cautious when maneuvering especially sharp corners or dark spots.
“This was a very unfortunate accident but preventable.., drivers need to heed to our calls on over-speeding,” Supt. Ndushabandi.
