Police in Gakenke District have called upon commercial cyclists to desist from all attempts that may put their lives and that of other road users at risk.
Police cautioned them to ride carefully especially in this rainy period, which create potentially dangerous conditions for road users and cyclists in particular.
The call was made Friday by the District Police Commander (DPC) for Gakenke, Chief Inspector of Police(CIP) Viateur Ntiyamira during the meeting with over 200 cyclists operating in Gakenke town.
He further advised cyclists to wear reflector jackets so as to be noticed by motorists in the dark.
The DPC noted that many cyclists have been involved in avoidable accident because they use the road recklessly making deadly maneuvres and they end up being hit by cars.
He highlighted the increasing dangerous habit from cyclists of holding on to heavy trucks on hilly areas of the road, and warned them against such suicidal behaviours.
CIP Ntiyamira said: “Mind about your speed because in some cases you lose control or brakes and results are fatal.”
He also urged them to partner in community policing activities through timely information sharing to detect, fight and prevent crimes, singling out illicit drugs as one of the issues to give much attention by reporting dealers.
