Fresh call for respect of road rules

Rwanda National Police (RNP) calls upon road users to abstain from breaching of road rules to avoid costly and dangerous accidents from happening.

The call follows four accidents that happened on November 16 and 17 in Kicukiro, Rubavu, Gakenke and Kamonyi districts, in which two people died and others injured.

They included a lorry Truck T120 AJP, Toyota Coaster RAB 545M and a cyclist.

The spokesperson for traffic and road safety, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Emmanuel Kabanda, said the accidents could have been avoided if the involved had not breached traffic rules by over-speeding.

He outlined talking on phone while driving, carelessness, mechanical faults and bad maneuvers as other causes of road accidents.

“Accidents can be preventable. Road users including drivers, pedestrians, and passengers need to respect road rules. We have said it time and again - some have honored the call, leading to a significant downfall in accidents, however, few still keep a deaf ear,” he said.

He urged vehicle owners to always take them for inspection and have mechanical faults fixed to avoid accidents.

“It’s in the interest of all road users not only to avert breach of road rules but also report those still violating them,” he said.
