Fraudster arrested with forged money

Police in Kicukiro District are holding a man suspected to be defrauding unsuspecting members of the public with forged currency notes.

Gabes Iyamuremye was arrested on Wednesday in Kabeza Village, Karembure Cell of Kicukiro Sector after one of the victims called the Police.

He is said to be part of the ring that defrauded one of the victim of Rwf2.8 million after giving him counterfeit currency notes amounting to US$3150, Police said.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorrett Umutesi, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that the victim was approached by a group of about four men including Iyamuremye guising as money changers.

“The suspects approached the victim, who wanted to exchange money into dollars… they intercepted him as he was going to a forex bureau and made him believe that they were money changers with the lowest rate,” CIP Umutesi said.

“The victim fell into their trap, made the exchange only to realize later that all the dollar notes were fake; he called the Police and arrested Iyamuremye although his accomplices managed to flee the scene with the money,” she added.

She advised the general public to be vigilant and to avoid making deals with people with no business address, to avoid falling prey.
