A man suspected of running a ghost charity firm and defrauding unwitting members of the public was arrested in Ruhango District on Wednesday.
Innocent Karake, 44, was arrested in Kinazi Sector, Rubona Cell, Gishike Village following information that he was conning people on promise that he would give bursaries.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for Southern region, confirmed the arrest. “Karake was telling people that he has a charity organization that pays school fees for people aged between seven and 23 years, but first demanded Rwf300, 000 as registration fee.”
He added that not only the suspect was scamming people but was also using forged documents.
“The suspect was found in possession of three forged copies of National IDs bearing his photo but under the names of Jean Pierre Nzeyimana, Sarah Tuyizere and Eric Ndagijimana. He also had other forged documents of his ghost charity firm called children support project,” CIP Karekezi explained.
Karake was also guising as an engineer working for a company that builds bridges as well as an employee of Compassion International.
His arrest followed information provided by the would-be victims, the spokesperson said.
CIP Karekezi urged the public to be wary of such criminals and called for vigilance and information sharing to avoid falling prey.
